Studying Mid tones.

Hello Folks, Studying value is one of the most important task as an artist, And even more so as a tattoo artist since we don’t have full access to full values when we are working on skin. So today we’re going to do a mid tone study.

The subject is a scene from blade runner 2047.

I really like this scene because of the strong triangular composition, in the movie This android is going to attack Ryan Gosling. We can see the edges of the character dissolving into the background to show his intentions. Huge triangular shape and the two smaller triangles in his shirt shows this is a strong character and you don't want the mess with him.

So let’s get into the study:

Step1: Setting up the background using the darkest dark I will use. (around a 6-7. 10 being darkest.)

Step2: Sketching in the frame of the drawing with a close value.

Step3: Working up the values to my second dark and coloring it in. Repeat until we at lightest value.

Step4: Finishing up fixing the shapes and make sure high lights have a sharp edge.

Now under grey scale we can see despite we don’t have the full arsenal of values. We are still able to tell the story with mid tones.

Lastly in the spirt of application and fun I mixed him with a Japanese daruma which is surprisingly matching.

Hope you’d try this out too and remember to have fun drawing.

Check out the video for my poor Asian jokes and steps on this study.
